The shield doesn't do anything. damage goes straight to pilot.
Found it: only another player's bullets could land on the shield. Bots' shots and explosions never did, so against bots it did nothing. With the 6 October update a bot's shot that hits the shield from the front lands on it, and the shield takes its part of an explosion in front of you. A shot at your head still goes over it. A hit on the shield is split between the shield and you; whether the shield should take all of it is being looked at. Please retest.
